Oscar is very unusual child. He is afraid of a lot things, but i guess that is because nine eleven kinda traumatised him. He is also a very stubborn child. He was very attached to his father and actually still is. After the death of the father, Oscar don't really rely on his mother as he maybe should but instead he choose to rely on his Grandmother. During the story he begins to work together with his grandfather to find the lock for the key. In end of the film Oscar relation with his mom gets healed, because they talk about the whole event.
I think that the reason that Oscar embarks on the quest to find the lock for the recovered key, is because he hopes that somehow it will bring his dad back.
Write a characterization of Oskar - A tramautized, odd and stubborn kid. A kid with alot of fears and then again, he does not fear that much. He travel around New York on his own after the death of his father, which shows some of the bravery and fearlessness this kid holds.
Why does Oskar embark on the search for the lock for the key? What does he gain from the experience? - He gains closure. Simple. After his fathers death, he tries to finds something that can replace his thought of his father falling down from the Word trade center, which in this case is the chase for the lock. He achieves closure and a replacement in the end.
Oskar is a very intelligent boy, but he does not know how to deal with grief. He is very organized and determined, and strongly believes, that he can hold on to his dad. He becomes obsessed with his search for the lock, showing that he can not let go of his dad, and the hope that he can somehow come back.
The search for the lock that fits the key becomes an obsession to Oskar. It is so important for him to find it, because he wants to hold on to his dad. He is convinced that his dad has left something for him to find. I think he, by trying to find what his dad has left, refuses to let go of him, and he probably hopes that he will find something that will "keep his dad alive", even though he is dead.
Oskar is not a normal boy. He is a very organized guy and always have order in his stuff. He is very mature and adult in his actions, considering that he is only 13 years old. As time goes on, he learns to live with the thought that his father sadly is not coming back.
Oskar becomes obsessed. He is determined to find out what the key fits. He believes that his father has left something to him, and he believes that this key is the central thread to find out what his father has left him. Oskar thinks that by finding out what the key fits, maybe he will get closer to his father. But as time goes on, he discovers that the key does not benefit him.
Oskar is not like a regular boy, he is very intelligent, funny, organized and he says what is in his mind. He is a very brave guy but at the same time afraid of a lot things. He was very close to his dad so that is also why he is so obsessed to find the lock of the key.
Oskar feels like he is loosing his dad, so that is why he is trying to find the lock to the key so he can feel "close" to his dad again while finding it. He wants to make his dad proud of him, so that is why he wont stop searching for the lock. While he is trying to find the lock, his family becomes closer, he finds out that his grandmother's renter is his granddad and that his mom knows him better than he thinks. His dad also wanted to develop Oskar to a more brave person, who is not so scary of anything, and in the end after looking for the lock Oskar became this kind of person.
Oskar Schell is the protagonist. He has lost his father, which was very difficult for him, because he was the only one who could understand him. He is a strong willed boy, who does not give up when he wants something. He seems very intelligent, and is not afraid of speaking his mind. Oskar could not understand how his dad could past away, and that was also why he started to search for the lock to the key. He thought that the key had something important to do about his father. He believes that if he does find what the key fits he will become closer to his father. After he has tried everything he possible can do, he discover that it do not belong to him.
He is the narrator and protagonist of the movie. He goes to school, but we don’t know which grade his in. He has short, normal brown hair. He is skinny and has a neutral clothing style – often wearing a hat. He lives with his mother in an apartment on Manhattan and his grandmother is living in the apartment across the street.
Oscar is not like every other boy. He has been tested for Aspberger’s syndrome, but the test was inconclusive. He is very intelligent but has some phobias/fears. He finds it hard to do certain things, like using the public traffic, go on swings – he does not feel secure “around” them. When his fear is taking over, he has a tambourine which he uses to calm himself down with. He likes exploring things and acting like an inventor. He used to have a close relationship to his dad. They did a lot of things together and Oscar saw him as his role model. Oscar has had a lot of trouble facing his father’s death. He didn’t feel like anyone could understand him and was especially harsh with his mom. Because of Oscar not being completely normal and just a kid, he sometimes asks or say some non-appropriated things. He is very straight forward. He asks a lot of questions and is very curious. When not knowing what to do, Oscar sometimes hurts himself as a punishment – feels guilty.
First to mention Oscar Shell is a very intelligent boy. He remembers almost everything down to the smallest detail and is always very organized. He overthinks every single situation and needs to find a meaning with everything – even though there just isn’t one. He’s a really anxious boy and fears a lot of normal things like taking the train, passing a bridge or just people shouting. He always has a tambourine with him, who protects him from the bad stuff in life. All these things are some kind of autistic traits. Oscar had a very close relationship with his father, who past away in 9/11. His father’s dead made Oscar even more fragile, he starts hurting himself physically, so the mental pain will go away.
Finding what the key fits becomes an obsession for Oscar. But in Oscars search for the lock he gains a lot of things. He becomes partners with the renter (or his granddad) who helps him overwin a lot of his fears. He talks to a lot of people and hear their stories to. This makes him realise that he’s not the only one who ever lost someone he loved. His relationship to his mother also grows stronger. Oscar’s mom learns to think like Oscar, and she plays a big role for his journey to find the lock. He learns to live without his dad and accept the fact that he’s gone forever, only to be carried in the family’s hearts.
Oscat Schell is the protagonist in the film. He is a 13 year old boy whom is dealing with the death of his father, Thomas. Oscar has an undefined illness which is very similar to Asperger syndrome. Oscar is a very curious boy. His dad taught him from a young age never to give up on things which is the reason why he thrives passionately for results when he investigates things. Oscar has a hard time connecting to other people due to his condition but has managed to connect perfectly to his dad. Oscar is a very intelligent boy considering his age and therefore his dad treats him as an adult. Oscar needs everything to make sense and if not he will look for the answers and put the puzzle back together. Oscar carries around a tambourine which calms him down when he feels stressed or scared. After his father’s death Oscar and his mother manages to get along because Oscar feels that she puts in an effort to understand how his mind works just as his dad used to. Oscar is determined to solve the mystery about the key. His dad taught him never to give up and therefore he keeps looking for the answer. He is certain that his father has left something for him to find which is what keeps him going. At the end of his journey to solving the quest he discovers that the key wasn’t meant for him which upsets him deeply. I believe that Oscar imagined that he would be able to stay close to his dad through the thing he was hoping to find with the key. When he discovers that the key is not meant for him he stops living in ignorance yet manages to get closure.
Oskar is the main character in the movie. He is a very different boy. He is afraid of a lot of things and has a very hard time getting out of his comfort zone. He has a very special relationship with his father, before he died. Oskar is very shy, so talking to other people is not his thing. His father used to push him, so Oskar could over come some of his fears that hold him back. Oskar crosses a lot of boundaries after his fathers dead through his mission to find the lock. so in a sense Oskar brakes out of his comfort zone with the help from his fathers death.
Oskar needs to find sense in everything. He believed that his father was the only one who could think like him, but in the end of the movie we find out that his mother is just as capable of thinking like him. this event makes him a lot close to his mother and the fact that his father is never coming back.
Oskar Schell (the protagonist) is an extremely intelligent boy. It's quite impressing how he's capable of maintaining an overview over a whole situation, like when he is on the expedition of the sixth borough. But at the same time he is kind of a control-freak, he doesn't like trying things that makes him feel like he's in some kind of danger(he's being addicted to feeling secure)- just like when his dad tries to make him sit on the swing. He believes in things that can be proved scientifically, and when he's looking for answers he won't stop the search before he has gained these answers. Oskar is struggeling to find out how he can elongate "the time" with his dad, and actually to be more specific; the memory of his dad. At first he doesn't think that he's capable of living without him, but after the search for the lock that fits the key that once belonged to his dad, he realizes that he can move on. Even though he's "gone" he will always be there with him in his heart. Despite the fact the key wasn't meant for him, he doesn't feel that his journey has been a waste of time. It has allowed him to push his limits, to step out of his comfort zone and to meet a ton of people who also, in some kind of way, had lost something or someone just like he had. And most important it had allowed himself to open up toward his mom, and his "newly discovered" grandfather.
Please note that the characterization is based on the first half of the film.
“Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” tells the story of a boy named Oscar Shell who lost his father on 9/11. Oscar is the nine-year old protagonist of the film, also a self-proclaimed inventor. He has a tendency to overthink and overanalyze things but at the same time is undoubtedly intelligent and has an utterly perfect memory. Oscar’s relationship to his father was very close and important to the boy. Therefore it was a great loss for Oscar when his father was killed during the attacks. Oscar might have some autistic traits, but is nevertheless a sad kid. Since he is not able to deal with the pain mentally he canalizes it to a physical level by hurting himself. Oscar is obsessed with finding where a key, that his father used to own, belongs, which brings him on a great journey that at the end of the day makes him realize the significance of life and death and how he is not the only person in the entire world dealing with loss, though he daily struggles to find out how he can prolong his time with his dead father.
Oskar is a very bright boy compared to other kids at his age. What I believe we see, is a typical stereotype of the victims on the World Trade Center attack, in the way he's very curious and of course extremely in grief. He is a unique kid, and you can't help being amazed several times during the movie, due to his humorous, sarcastic and sometimes pretty odd actions. For example he would often suddenly start to run, instead of just walking regularily. But I believe that's a sign of vulnerability, because he has so many feelings that he tries to suppress in some way.
Oskar has some kind of disorder or autism, and there are many signs shown during the movie. He would often go on random thoughts, extremely high intelligence (He knows so many things, that kids on his age wouldn't know normally!) and explain how everything makes sense, by using mathematical calculations
He would also carry a tambourine and walk to the sound of it. The sound makes him feel safe and comfortable, while he walks at the streets on his quest to figure out the death of his father. He needs to know what happened to his father and he needs to know what the mysterious key is all about.
Oskar is clearly depressed and in grief by the loss of his father, but amazingly in his age, he manages to deal with the grief very well. He show's caring towards his family, and allows his mind to think freely. He is so strong, self-motivated and it is hard not to feel sympathy with him.
I believe that his mission about finding the matching lock to the mysterious key, is about getting closer to the dad, and understand him better. Before his father's death, they would go on scavenge hunt together, looking for clues and items. When Oskar finds the key, it is a way of continuing with his life, like it was a usual scavenge hunt with his dad. It is truely fascinating how he thinks about everything and understand everything so it makes sense for him.
Write a characterization of Oskar. He is a young boy. He has a close relationship with his father, and when his father, Thomas, dies in the 9/11 tragedy, it has a huge impact on Oskar and his further life. He gets bullied by the other kids and does not really have any other friends than his father. Oskar is very intellectual and knows all kind of random facts. Oskar is very determent when he sets something on his mind.
Why does Oskar embark on the search for the lock for the key? What does he gain from the experience? I think the reason he keeps searching for this lock, is because he feels like it is his father giving him a last challenge. Also, it feels like this he does this investigation to get final closure. This search could also be a sign of Oskar trying to keep life in his dead father, because these 'hunting-missions' was something Oskar and his father was doing together and Oskar really loved it. In the search of the lock he meets "the renter" who is the only person who he can speak with, like he did with his father. Later on he figures out "the renter" is actually his grandfather. Oskar develops a lot through this film, which is a very central theme in this plot.
Oskar Shell is the protagonist in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. He is a young boy around the age of 11. Oskar is very clever for his age, and was very close with his father. His dad and him understood each other and did everything together. Oskar loses his dad on 9/11 (the worst day.) After the father's death, Oskar finds a key he believes his dad has left for him. He now spends the rest of the movie trying to find the lock for this key, to get closer with his father. He's a weird kid, and not like everyone else. Even before the father's death, he was very careful. Everything needs to be safe! and there must be made sense of things. He's very sensitive, and doesn't know how to get rid of his pain in a healthy way. In the end he finds the lock for the key, but it was never made for him. But! His journey did have a purpose. He learned how to live without his dad, and got closer with his mom.
Oskar is a special boy, and very intelligent of his age. When his dad dies under the 9/11 it has a huge impact on Oskar, not only because it is his dad but also because of the special relationship he had to his father. Oskar is a shy boy and he don't have many friends, so instead of playing with friends like normal kids would do then he goes out to solves mysteries often given by his dad.
There could be several reasons for him to continue this hunt. Oskar clearly think the key was his father way of giving him a last ‘challenge’ and maybe in the end he will get to know his father just a tiny bit better than he did before his death. Keeping life in his father could also be a reason he spends months trying to figure out who “Black” is. Oskar gains a lot from this journey. He meets a lot of people, and get rid of his anxiety which is to communicate with other people – he develops quite a lot through this whole movie, and this development is also an important theme in the plot.
Oskar is the protagonist in the story, he is 9 years old and lives in New York. He is very intelligent, and always tries to analyse situations by using mathematical methods. He has an eye for details, and is very calculative.
His relationship with his father is very close and after his father's death, he becomes very melancholic and paranoid. We learn that Oskar is maybe suffering from Asperger syndrome, and that can maybe answer why he is always afraid of something. Through the whole story Oskar develops from being fearful and paranoid, to brave and in control. That is what his father wants for him, and he fulfills his father's wish by having the courage to go out in the world, and communicate with people.
In the movie Oskar is a very complex character, he have a certain wit and sarcasm in him, that make him entertaining. But at the same he is a very sad character too, and we empathize with him. His complexity lies in, how he manages to be a funny, melancholic, detail-orientated and sympathetic figure through the whole movie. These character traits make him a psychollogical interesting and vulnerable human, behind the character.
1) Oskar Schell is the protagonist. He is a unique nine-year old boy, who has many fears. He holds no thoughts back and simply just speak his mind. He is determined and a strong-willed boy, who is lost and struggling by accepting his father death, at the 9/11 attack. Oskar had an extremely close bond with his father and look up to him. Now when Thomas is dead, Oskar is now relying on his grandmother instead of his mother, which he is moving further away from. Oskar needs to make everything sense and therefore tries to make sense of his father’s death. Oskar feels like he is losing his father and by looking for the lock to the key, Oskar thinks his father has left him, Oskar believes that it will get him closer and give him more time with his father. Oskar is desperately clinging to the last memories of his father, even if it hurts. Oskar is suffering of guilt, because he didn´t picked up the phone when his father called, when the attack on the towers was happening. Now he is punishing himself physical and mentally, for not being able to take the phone.
2) Oskar keep searching for the key, because he feels he can gets closer to his father and Oskar feels like he also need to prove that the sixth barrowed existed and to solve the mystery of the key, to make his father proved. But what he gains from the expedition is closure and he can live his life on without hurting so much. As he says in the end of the movie “the whole point was stop missing him”
Oskar Schell the protagonist is a very special little kid. He is afraid of heights and he keeps a tambourine in his hands, just so he can keep himself calm. He is very clever, and he knows a lot about many different things. He is the type that doesn’t give up very easily. Even his parents thought that something was wrong with him, maybe he had Asperger’s? But he didn’t. He is just one of a kind. If he was sad he would keep it inside and he is punishing himself with self-harm. With time he learned to live with the thought of his dad is never coming back. And that’s just how it is. He loved his dad and he for sure loved to be around him. He looked at his dad as the best dad in the world.
Oskar is a little boy, that lost his father on the day of 9/11. He is a special kid, that most of the time only his father got, so when he lost him he had a hard time trying to fit in this world having nobody that understood, one day he feels like he is finally losing his father and the feeling of his presence so he goes into his closet with his clothes and finds a blue vase that he accidentally breaks that has a little key in it with an envelope with the name black written on it, so oskar makes it his mission to find the black that gave this key to his father hoping it fits a lock with something waiting for Oskar to find, the last mission he could do for his father. He goes through almost every family, and on his journey he realizes a lot of things, he starts understanding his mother and her understanding him, he meets his grandfather and he sees most of his fears to head. In the ending it turns out that Oskar found a key that did not belong to his father but the man that sold his father the vase he found. Oskar accepts this but then finally realizes something, so he goes to the swings that he was once afraid to ride and sees the hidden letter his dad had left him. It gives him peace and finally releases him from the pain and bad feeling he had all along.
Oscar Shell is the protagonist in the movie ” Extremely loud and incredibly close”. Oscar lost his father when he was 9 years old at the 9/11 attack. Oscar is a very intelligent boy. He is very organized and thinks strategically. He is a special and unusual kid in his own way. Oscar is terrified of a lot of things. He is afraid of public transport, busses, trains etc. He is also terrified of bridges, swings and did not dare to talk to people. Oscar was attached to his father and still is, even though he is not there for him physically, he is still there for him mentally. Oscar goes thru a development. In the beginning of the movie Oscar was a scared, shy and intimidated boy. In the ending Oscar became the person that his dad wanted him to be, he was not so intimidated and he developed as a person. Oscar dared to talk with people he did not know, he dared to take the public transport, to cross bridges and lastly he dared to swing.
NB: I’ve written the analysis under the circumstances that I didn’t see first part of the film
1) Oskar Schell is a rather special boy. He has a huge temper and there are moments in the film where he seems quite self-destructive. At one point he loses his temper because he almost has given up his search on the one Black who the key belongs to. He doesn’t act rational tearing several of the things that have anything to do with this search apart. Those rage attacks are his challenge. Also he often gets scared or nervous why he’s always carrying a tambourine because its sound keeps him calm. Oskar is definitely not a boy like any other boy. He knows it himself and has a hard time accepting that he is not perfectly normal. Oskar isn’t only special in terms of his temper; he also is very determined and curious. Those are some of his qualities. He doesn’t just give up. When he finds that key in the blue vase he doesn’t just think ‘Oh, what a nice key. I’ll keep it for myself, hide it. It’s my secret’. He instead decides to find the owner. He wants to solve the mystery of this key. 2) It’s exactly Oscar’s curious mind that makes him able to start the unbelievably impossible search of finding that one Black the strange key belongs to. Oscar’s dad always told him that you shouldn’t go for the easy hunts but the difficult instead. And this hunt is indeed a difficult one. On his way Oskar meets bunches of different people, some more friendly than others. He stands on his own feet and he’s very determined. But at last when he finds the true owner of the key he realizes that finding him wasn’t the most important thing. He talks to this man about his father’s death; how he was stuck in The World Trade Center at 9/11, how he called home 6 times, how he (himself) didn’t answer the last call even though he heard his father begging on the answering machine, how he now feels some sort of guilty conscience. In the very end Oskar understands that the goal of his hunt hadn’t something to do with the key. The goal was the process. And the process actually matured Oskar.

ReplyDelete“Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” tells the story of a boy named Oscar Shell who lost his father on 9/11.
ReplyDeleteHe is a unique kid, and you can't help being amazed several times during the movie, due to his humorous, sarcastic and sometimes pretty odd actions.
ReplyDeleteHe is a young boy.
ReplyDeleteHe's a weird kid, and not like everyone else.
ReplyDeleteThere could be several reasons for him to continue this hunt.
ReplyDeleteHis relationship with his father is very close and after his father's death, he becomes very melancholic and paranoid.
ReplyDeleteHe holds no thoughts back and simply just speak his mind.
ReplyDeleteIf he was sad he would keep it inside and he is punishing himself with self-harm.
ReplyDeleteOscar Shell is the protagonist in the movie ” Extremely loud and incredibly close”.
ReplyDeleteNB: I’ve written the analysis under the circumstances that I didn’t see first part of the film
ReplyDelete1) Oskar Schell is a rather special boy.
